Held over two days (6-7th October 2017), Something Good is a unique design festival that includes a day of exciting and inspiring talks from a diverse selection of creatives, an after party and a full day of creative workshops across the city of Bristol.

The inaugural Something Good festival has been and gone, and what a couple of days it was. On Friday, St George’s played host to a jam packed day of beautifully honest and intriguing talks from our team of creatives, who spoke candidly about how they work and the creative process.

Hosted by Founder of Intern Magazine and all round nice guy, Alec Dudson, the morning kicked off with local legend and creative polymath, Gav Strange, who’s infectious energy was a wake up call for anyone still half asleep. Wilfrid Wood shared real insight (and a little more than expected) as he discussed his career as a “satirical sculpturist”. Following Wilfrid, Morag Myerscough, who’s work can be found around the world, shared insight on how she creates her larger than life installations.

Following a break for lunch, some grub and a bit of a natter, we were into the afternoon session and the Something Good crowd were treated to an entertaining talk from Brendan Dawes. Brendan talked about the space between analogue and digital and how he likes to “create environments and systems for people to play with”. Following Brendan and all the way from Amsterdam, designer, art director and new mum, Marta Veludo held a gym class, taking the audience through tips on how to make your work a success.

Karin from Dutch design studio, Trapped in Suburbia offered fantastic insight, breaking down the client/creative conundrum, before offering 5 top tips for brainstorming. For the final afternoon slot, a man who told us to ‘work hard and be nice to people’ Anthony Burrill shared some of his early career design work and experiments, before telling the audience “don’t be normal, don’t be ordinary”. Damn right Anthony!

For the grand finale, Snask took to the stage with their leather clad rock band, Vag, for a talk come gig, laden with amusing anecdotes and good advice for creatives such as ‘Don’t mix rock n’ roll with professional’.  Good advice indeed. The day finished with more live music and drinking at the Real Good After party.

Saturday saw a chain of hands-on workshops popping up across the city. A bunch of lucky creatives got the chance to create letter pressed typographic posters with Anthony Burrill, others tried their hand at spoon carving with illustrator turned woodsman Andrew Groves aka Miscellaneous Adventures, there were portfolio reviews with Handsome Frank and many more exciting workshops to be found in every creative corner of Bristol.
